EILEEN FJERSTAD:
Artist Eileen Fjerstad has been painting professionally in the mountains of Southwest Colorado and the deserts of the Four Corners since the mid 1980’s becoming a well-known regional artist. Fjerstad is primarily a plein air painter whole materials and equipment are always close at hand. Fjerstad was a past, long-time owner of Needles Country Square.
Fjerstad endeavors to capture the ever-changing and delightful compositions provided by the San Juan Mountains as well as the amazing variety of landscapes found in the cliffs, canyons, and “hidden beauty pockets" of nearby desert country has brought great joy to the artist and, hopefully, to her collectors as well.
Fjerstad has a studio/gallery in both Silverton, Colorado and Bluff, Utah.

PAUL FOLWELL:
At Purgatory Ski Area's inception summer, Folwell worked on the trail crew and ran the Ski patrol in the winter. As the area began to grow, co-owner of the endeavor, Chet Anderson's, role as general manager meant spending less time on the mountain, so Folwell took on the role of mountain manager. As the ski area expanded into Hermosa Park, Folwell became more involved in the layout and design of the ski trails. "It was a great job," says Folwell. It was an honor for me to have a ski trail named after me, "Paul's Park". As an artist with a graphic design background and fine art, Folwell painted the first overhead, bird's-eye view paintings of the trails that became the art layer for the early printed trail maps. His paintings of skiers in powder and local landscapes hang still in the current Purgatory Lodge building.
Folwell's studio is in Hermosa.

BRIAN POPKE:
In 1984 Popke arrived at Purgatory in his 1959 Willies Wagon from Chicago. As a river guide and "master tinkerer" Popke expresses his love for the mountains, rivers, canyons and deserts in our area through watercolour, bas relief paper art and multi-media art including driftwood and other finds from the great outdoors. Still "three-pinning" in his wool trench coat without poles, Popke can be found on the slopes of Purgatory. His quiet, in-the-woods "retirement" studio is at Vallecito. MOTHER CLINE:
Mother Cline is a fine artist in her own right mainly capturing portraits of our beloved locals and employees at Purgatory in pen and ink. Cline's background is in commercial art and illustration and second-generation offset print specialist. That's why she owns a liquor store now! Cline purchased Needles Liquor from Paul and Alison Reed in 2016, moved the store to Purgatory in 2020. Cline specializes now in wine, assisting customers in choosing the perfect varietal, appellation and wine maker for their palate in addition to her portrait work.

Hope this becomes a mini "reunion" of all the ol' Purgatory folks who personally know the artists. We invite you to come up, enjoy the beginning of fall colours, sip some wine samples and visit. The smaller originals and prints have been priced to sell so we can all have a little of these wonderful artists in our homes or gift to our friends. Many pieces will be well under $100 and most under $50.
